From the editors September 2026

“A museum should be open at any hour, and it should always tell you where a work really lives.”

EPRIS Museum has no building, no ticket desk and no closing time. What it has is halls of work, each of them in the public domain or shared under an open licence. The older works come from the open collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The newest are photographs and telescope images whose authors chose Creative Commons. Under every plate we print the artist, the date, the licence and where the original lives.

Among the newest halls, The Room Itself is the building you're standing in before you look at a painting: museums and exhibition spaces from Singapore to the Met. Stone and Memory and A Year of Looking Closely are this year's international winners of Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth, heritage sites and protected land photographed by whoever happened to live nearby, every one of them released under an open licence for exactly this. After that the halls follow the centuries, from Greek marble to pictures made in the last few years, including the halls of sculpture we opened this September, because a screen flattens everything and sculpture is a reminder that art takes up room. Further down, the wall draws every work at its true size: you can set Degas’s Little Dancer against Rodin’s Thinker, or a Chardin the size of a book against a Tintoretto two and a half metres wide.

The museum is also an invitation. If you make photographs or paintings, or want to build an exhibition from what already hangs here, write to us through the open call.

a person, 170 cm

Museums hang paintings with their centre at 150 cm, so that is the line every painting sits on here. Sculpture stands on the floor instead, its photograph scaled to the real height of the object. Sizes come from the collection records, not from the screen: Hokusai’s wave is the size of a sheet of paper, Vuillard’s window is three and a half metres wide. Every rectangle opens its work.
